for Soap making
Soap
making the old fashioned way using Sodium Hydroxide can be rather
intimidating. However, if you use melt and pour Glycerin Soap, then you
can easily make your own custom soaps! You can melt Glycerin Soap in
either the microwave or a double boiler. Simply melt the soap, add color
and fragrance, stir and pour into a mold. To speed up the setting time,
put it in the freezer.
To melt in microwave:
Slice
soap into 1/8" strips. Place soap and thin shavings of color chips in
Pyrex beaker and microwave for approximately 45 seconds to 1 minute,
depending on the amount of soap. Remove and stir lightly, continue to
microwave at 15-second intervals until melted. If soap is overheated, it
may discolor. The color will lighten once the soap has cooled. Add desired
fragrance pour soap as soon as fragrance is added. Pour soap into your
mold, let cool and harden before removing from mold. For fast set, allow
soap to cool for 1 minute then cover with plastic wrap and seal. Place in
either the refrigerator or the freezer for approximately 10 minutes.
Double Boiler: Follow
the same instructions as for the microwave and adjust the heat to keep the
soap at a constant liquid point. Do not leave soap heated for more than 10
minutes.
Body Scrubs: Make
your own textured soaps that will gently remove dead skin leave your skin
feeling soft, clean and healthy. Add natural ingredients such as: finely
ground almonds, finely ground coconut, ground walnut, toasted oatmeal,
finely ground wheat germ or pumice. Add corresponding fragrances.
Double Sided Soaps: Pour
one side of one variety of soap and allow it to cool and harden. Once
hardened remove the soap half and trim so that the soap lays flat. Next
melt more soap and pour another half of another variety. Immediately set
the hardened half into the liquid half, lightly press soap into the liquid
soap causing a small excess of liquid soap to escape.
Marbleized Soap: Simply
make two different colored bars of soap. Allow bars to cool. Shave thin
strips of both colored bars, mix shavings. Melt more uncolored soap, add
colored shavings and pour. Do not mix.
